Leve (Light) Chair 1942
Chen, a design critic along with curator of design along with architecture in Hong Kong M + museum, includes short biographies of a dozen most prominent mid-century furniture designers of Brazil in modern Brazil. One of them, Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992), woodworking learned through his father in Portugal, then brought those skills to Rio in 1928. At first he worked for firms which are specialized in providing rich houses of styles traditional European as Chippendale along with Louis XVI. Convinced which these heavy, padded pieces were out of place in his country of tropical adoption, he started out to experiment with more streamlined forms.
In 1942, the work of Tenreiro caught the attention of the most important Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who commissioned to design furniture for a house he was building. Those pieces relied strongly on the Bauhaus, Italian along with Scandinavian influences, Chen says, along with Tenreiro from the same year he produced what he considered its innovative design, the chair levers. With upholstered cushions floating on a graceful, swooping frame made of Ivorywood, imbuia (similar to walnut) or Jacaranda, the levers which embodies the modern Brazilian furniture Tenreiro ethos should be "formally the light ... a light which does not has nothing to do with the weight itself, yet with grace along with functionality of space. "

deck chairs Forma, 1950 along with 1960
Carlo Hauner (1927-1997), an immigrant in Italy, owned a furniture store with Rodrigues for a time along with he bought a São Paulo furniture-manufacturing factory which had belonged to Bo Bardi along with her husband. In 1955, he along with Vienna-born Martin Eisler (1913-1977), who had settled in Buenos Aires, Argentina, founded Form to sell their own designs along with pieces licensed by Knoll International. Venturing further into mass production along with international marketing, their decades-long collaboration resulted in industrial-inspired pieces which were elegant yet affordable, Chen writes. Today, the successor of Form, Interieur Forma, will be headquartered in Argentina, yet remains active in Brazil.
By the early 1960s, Chen noted, critics of Kubitschek complained which Brazil was experiencing "50 years of inflation in 5". The country experienced social unrest along with political turmoil. In 1964, a shot of a military dictatorship was installed right which would likely last until 1985. A subsequent period of extraordinary economic growth, known as the Brazilian miracle, has benefited some designers, like Ricardo Fasanello along with Jean Gillon. yet, Chen points out, the abolition of military dissent along with curtailment of exports has forced others into exile.

Rio Chaise 1971
In 1967, Niemeyer (1907-2012), said a Communist, fled the dictatorship in Brazil to Paris. There, in 1971, he began designing furniture for once, in collaboration with his daughter, Anna Maria Niemeyer, who had overseen interiors for most of the main buildings of Brasília. The seat cane along with bent wood woven structure of its Rio rocking chaise evoke the signature feature of his buildings: "the curves which I find from the mountains of my country, the sinuosity of its rivers, from the waves of the sea along with on the Centeng of the beloved woman."

carved solid wood chairs, 1970
from the 1940s along with '50s, a self-taught José Zanine Caldas (1918-2001) made a name for himself designing along with building plywood furniture at affordable prices in San Paolo along with private homes from the fresh capital. 1964 coup, however, forced him out of his teaching position at the University of Bras i lia. When he returned to his state of Bahia, he was horrified by deforestation around him. How Caldas has described as his "mobile cry," Chen says, has brought attention to the destructive practices to the environment on which the item was based its industry.
Today, Zanini de Zanine, 'son along with Rodrigues' Caldas apprentice, continues his father's legacy furniture generating, using industrial by-products along with recycled materials through demolition projects in an innovative way. Beyond Chairs
modern Brazil , co-published in March with R & co, he does not just chairs. Instead, the item provides the historical context, biographical information along with more than 400 photos of a wide range of furniture of the 20th century
"Brazil will be perhaps one of the last -. If not of last - great discoveries of furniture of the 20th century, "says Meyers introduction. As Chen continues to explain, the fact which designers half of the century of the country are not as well known as Eames or Breuer, for example, the item will be a result in part of its isolation during the dictatorship, the relatively modest production scale, along with difficulties from the export of tropical timber which may deform in drier climates along with eventually grew scarce. (An international trade agreement restricts the sale along with transport of products through wood endangered.)
yet there are signs which these designers are finally getting their due. In recent years, companies such as Etel Interiores along with LinBrasil have started out reissuing pieces, replacing sustainable woods when necessary. Earlier This kind of year, Wade Terwilliger, president of Palm Beach Modern Auctions, said which interest from the Brazilian design was growing. along with in May, Espasso, a gallery dedicated to Brazilian vintage along with contemporary furniture, has opened its fourth location in Miami.
